INFLUENCE OF TEACHERS MOTIVATION ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL IN TEMEKE MUNICIPALITY, DAR ES SALAAM

ABSTRACT:

The study investigated the influence of teachers’ motivation on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Temeke Municipality Dar es salaam. The specific objectives were; To find the factors influencing teachers’ motivation in public secondary schools, to establish whether teachers’ motivation influence students’ academic performance, to find the challenges facing teachers’ motivation in public secondary school, to suggest the remedial measures that will help to enhance teachers’ motivation. The study involved (100) respondents (teachers and head teacher) from two (2) public secondary school where questionnaires and interviews were used as instrument of data collections. The findings indicated that working condition factors and remuneration of factors influence teachers’ motivation on students’ academic performance. Evidenced that leadership and promotional opportunity elsewhere influence job satisfaction to a large extent as indicated by over 97% of the cases. The study found that through equal promotion opportunities policies, reward for good work and conducive teaching and learning environment, and improvement of salary influence job satisfaction among teachers to a large extent. The findings revealed that low salary and wages, poor provision of incentives, inconvenient promotion policy are some of the major challenges that teachers face and therefore de-motivate them in the profession. Based on the findings of this study it is recommended that employers should raise salaries; that will enable teachers to be able to fulfill their teaching roles. The government needs to reverse the removal of allowance and incentives and make them available to every school so that teachers will get motivated to go the extra mile to other work. The study recommended that improvement of motivation lead to the performance of the students.
