ABSTRACT

The study was prompted by the fact that despite the comparative advantages due to being affiliated to the church, the reputation and academic performance of the Catholic schools are reported to have dropped in the recent years. This dissertation had a general goal of examining challenges and opportunities in Catholic schools in Dar es Salaam. Various techniques were used in the data collection process. These included Observation, interviews, questionnaires and exploration of secondary data on the performance of the schools in the past five years. The study used both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study area was Dar es Salaam and three different secondary schools were purposely selected and used as case studies. In each school, teachers and students were randomly selected while the heads of schools were purposively selected to be respondents. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the data. The study concludes that the main challenges facing the schools include; frequent changing government policies and directives, competition from other schools (private and government owned) and the changing world’s needs (which compel to change of education curriculum). Rapid changes in Technology and Globalization are also challenging the type of education to be provided by the schools and the mode of providing it while maintaining the church vision and mission at the same time. The study recommends that the church should review its policy and techniques of developing spiritual education under the umbrella of normal education. The Catholic schools have to be more innovative in-order to compete with others.
