ABSTRACT

Aim of this study was investigate the effects of double shift program on teaching and learning process in public primary schools in Tanzania with particular reference to Ubungo Municipality. To achieve the main objective, the study used three specific objectives which were; to investigate the influence of double shift program on school discipline, to examine the influence of double shift program on teacher’s effectiveness and to investigate the influence of double shift program on time management in teaching and learning process in public primary schools at Ubungo municipality. The study was underpinned by CIPP model. To accomplish the desired findings, interview and questionnaires were used for data collection. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used in data analysis. A sample size of 203 respondents was used. The study used simple random and purposive sampling. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 70 teachers and 130 students from 3 selected schools. Purposive sampling was used to select 3 head teachers from 3 selected schools. The study found that double shift leads students’ indiscipline as indicated by absenteeism and noises during shift exchange. The study also revealed that double shift leads to teacher’s ineffectiveness because the afternoon climate makes students get tired which affect teaching and learning process. The study also found that there is poor time management in double shift school, learning time for students is reduced; there is limited time for interaction between teachers and students and also no time for extra curricula activities. It was recommended that government should build more class so as all students to be in single session for effective teaching and learning process. Parents also should insist their children to learn on their extra time instead of giving them other works or playing in order to get more learning time. The study recommends further study to enlarge the scope of the study and increase sample size by including more schools.
